Helpful information about visiting South Africa and the vaccinations recommended before your trip.
Most travellers are advised to have Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Rabies may be suggested for safari or rural travel, and routine vaccines should be up to date.
There is no malaria risk in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, or along the Garden Route. Protection is only needed for areas such as Kruger and certain lowveld regions.
It is best to start vaccinations around 6–8 weeks before departure. This allows time to complete any required doses before travel.
A certificate is only needed if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. It is not required for direct travel from the UK unless your route includes affected regions.
Prices depend on the vaccines needed. Some may be available on the NHS, while others are private, with full costs explained during your appointment.
Many vaccines can be given in one appointment, but some such as rabies require multiple doses over several weeks, so early planning is recommended.
